IE employment numbers are out

The jobs data for the IE was released this week. As expected it's not good.

Inland Southern California lost a staggering 76,500 jobs last year, by far the most ever, as its unemployment rate climbed to almost 12 percent, the state reported Thursday.

There were 6.1 percent fewer payroll jobs in Riverside and San Bernardino counties in January than there were in January 2008, the state Employment Development Department reported. The losses were mainly centered in blue-collar jobs.

The job losses, reported after the state updated its monthly statistics by applying data collected by federal agencies, were more than 10 times worse than the worst year on record.

Riverside is getting close to it's record high of 12.4% set in 1993. Currently Riverside is sitting at 12.2% (as of January, we are probably higher now).

Oof! This really is scary. The slope of those curves and nothing on the horizon presaging a turnaround. If anything likely more layoffs in the public sectors.

Scary, you think it's bad in Riverside. Look at some of these other numbers.

Merced County, 18.9%!
Stanislaus County, 16%
San Joaquin, 15.1%

18.9% is freaking like a Great Depression number.

The only reason the shooting hasn't started yet is that there is still a nagging little question... "Then what?"

I think the answer is ....
"you woke up in a puddle"

Seriously, I'm not really sure what you are saying Martin.

Golfer doesn't the decline in the swing coincide with the cut hand from the washer?

No the last two rounds before I maimed myself were also horrid. I was playing some of the best golf I've ever played right before that. It must be some cosmic balancing force. Kinda like with house prices. ;-)

well, i dont know if its coincidence, but in the last three weeks I had my rims stolen off of my cadillac while i was in the mall, my son had his ipod stolen out of his gym bag and then I came out of the bowlng alley at 9 pm and some drunks were screaming at each other and the husband threw a beer bottle AT MY CAR and broke the windshield, they took off before i could get their drivers license. It just kind of makes me wonder if crime is on the rise...? (or if i just had a really messed up month)

So many of the jobs created in the boom years in the IE were related to the housing industry. Add in the service sector jobs (mainly retail) that go away when these people get laid off and move or stop spending it's not pretty.
